Insulation Before & After in San Diego, CA
Photos tell the truth faster than any brochure. Below are real transformations from attics across San Diego County. Not every “before” is dramatic from the outside. Sometimes it’s a thin layer of flattened fiberglass. Sometimes it’s bare drywall. The after shots show what proper coverage actually looks like, and what it does to a utility bill. This is the work we do, documented plainly.
Recent Transformations
Attic Insulation Replacement in Clairemont
Before
AfterThe attic had original 1970s batt insulation that had settled to about three inches. Flat, matted, and doing almost nothing. We air-sealed the top plates, removed the old material, and blew in Owens Corning fiberglass to R-38 depth across the full attic floor. The upstairs bedrooms stopped swinging ten degrees between afternoon and night. Homeowner reported a 22% drop in summer cooling costs on the first full bill.
Spray Foam Insulation in a Mission Valley Vaulted Ceiling
Before
AfterVaulted ceilings with no attic cavity are a common San Diego problem, especially in mid-century homes. This one had direct sun on the roofline and a living room that read 84 degrees by 3 p.m. We applied closed-cell spray foam directly to the underside of the roof deck. That turned the unvented space into a conditioned area. The room now holds temperature within four degrees of the thermostat setting, and the roof actually quieted down in the rain too.
Blown-In Insulation Top-Up in Rancho Peñasquitos
Before
AfterThe attic had insulation from a previous owner, but it averaged about R-19 in a zone that calls for R-49. The soffit vents were also blocked, which was trapping heat and moisture. We installed vent baffles, repaired the bathroom exhaust termination that vented straight into the attic, and blew GreenFiber cellulose to R-44. The thermal difference showed within a day. The second floor felt like part of the same house for the first time.
Full Attic Cleanout and Air Seal in North Park

North Park Craftsman, original knob-and-tube wiring in spots, and signs of rodent activity throughout the old insulation. We worked with the electrician to confirm which circuits were decommissioned, removed the contaminated material, sanitized the space, and air-sealed every penetration, top plate, and chase with foam and caulk. Then fresh Knauf fiberglass went down. Beyond the thermal gain, the homeowner said the house simply smelled clean for the first time in years.
Spray Foam Rim Joist Sealing in Bay Ho

Rim joists are where the floor framing meets the foundation wall, and on a raised foundation they’re a direct path for outside air into the floor system. Floors were cold in January and the furnace ran constantly. We sealed the rim with Icynene spray foam and the difference in the living room floor was immediate. The crawlspace stopped feeding damp marine air into the house, and the couple noticed less dust on furniture within a month.
Attic Insulation Upgrade in Otay Ranch

Newer builds in Otay Ranch aren’t always insulated the way the model home was. This one had gaps over the bonus room and the garage shared a wall with a bedroom that baked every afternoon. We pulled the patchy batts, detailed the bypasses, and blew CertainTeed fiberglass to R-38 across the entire attic including above the garage. The bedroom next to the garage dropped six degrees on a 90-degree day. Straightforward fix, measurable result.
